Aquaculture Farm BEIA & PSIAs conducted by IEM will conform to the ASC Shrimp Standard.
The BEIA process seeks to obtain the best possible biodiversity outcomes from land use changes. It is important that all interested parties understand the process by which the assessment has been made and how and by whom any actions needed to deliver biodiversity objectives will be implemented and monitored.
The BEIA must provide reliable information about, and interpretation of, the ecological implications of the project from its inception to its operation and, where appropriate, its decommissioning.
The BEIA process also seeks to add value to ASC Shrimp Standard and contribute to demonstrating compliance, while taking into account specific local landscape conditions.
Participatory Social Impact Assessment includes the processes of analyzing, monitoring and managing the intended and unintended social consequences, both positive and negative, of planned interventions (policies, programs, plans, projects) and any social change processes invoked by those interventions.
Its primary purpose is to bring about a more sustainable and equitable biophysical and human environment. (International Association for Impact Assessment, www.iaia.org)
IEM has been working with Shrimp farms in Thailand to improve their operations to achieve the ASC Shrimp Standard. This will allow them to export their product to both Europe and North America.
The ASC Shrimp Standard requires a pSIA and a B-EIA to be conducted as part of the checklist of compliances for certification.
IEM works with our clients to evaluate their operations and to set up the data according to the audit checklist to assist them and prepare the shrimp farm for ASC Certification.
